Working Meeting — Move-A-Thon, school supplies, and fall planning
7:15 - Welcome and Introductions
Peter Elton - Here with Beacon Hill Youth Soccer
7:20 – Community Building Question: What is your favorite memory from summer vacation as a kid?
7:35 – Updates from the group
- Art Walk (will come back to)
- Move-A-Thon: Will continue to collect money at school and the online page until 6/30. Any money given past that will go towards next school year.
Planning to do again next year in same time fram. Currently at $202k! - Administration update: Nothing tonight from Ms Gray
School supplies: Thank you to the school for purchasing school supplies. We are collecting money from families to pay for these. Will be a backpack flier, another email, and one more email in the fall to let families know how to make their contribution.
Beacon Hill Youth Soccer (Peter Elton, coach and registration): A girls under 9 soccer coach w/ BHYS. 4-5 are Kimball students, some from Maple & other schools. Fall registration is now open, runs into mid-July officially but families often register all the way up until right after school begins. Trying to get the word out about BHYS. We have good turnout (~450 players ages 5-13) but the turnout of players isn’t representative of the neighborhood. Wanting to reach underserved population, get mat’ls translated, etc. Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese
8:10 – Discussion of Incoming Officers (Carrie S L): She and Kristen Su are a part of our Nominating Committee. With MB’s input, we are looking for a core group of leaders who can attend our meetings twice a month (or as able), take point on one-time events and projects, and participate in the year-round tasks that make the PTSA tick (getting interpretation or translation, communicating w/ office about announcements, being a liaison with EL families). Hope to divide up the work amongst a team.
8:20 – Events for early next year
- Open House: Maybe not as fun/hospitable but was less work so gave more energy for mingling, meeting parents, interaction.
Note from KT: Have had a decrease in families applying for Free & Reduced Lunch. One thing that could happen then is encouraging families to fill out that form. Available in-person and online but families w/ limited internet access or who don’t speak English/Spanish would benefit from paper forms.
Ways we could support Free Reduced Lunch form completion:
-Make it so every family fills out
-Tie it to a raffle
-Be transparent about the fact that we need this for funding
-
- BBQ?: Covid made a break in the continuity of this tradition.
- Directory discussion: the group considered an opt-in family contact list and planned to confirm requirements with school staff; private contact fields were omitted.
8:30 – What other events do we want to consider for next year?
- Kimball Kitchen - will hopefully happen!
- After School Classes? - Alaron and Tammy will meet w/ Ms. Phoebe
- MaT - Will happen!
- Art Walk -
- Spring Fling?: Backstory from Ms KT - this started many years ago by Ms McLean our PE teacher and our then-Music teacher as a sock hop, then grew and grew over the years to encompass many things. Perhaps instead of a Spring Fling we could do an Autumn Something that is simpler.
