7:35 - 7:55 - Updates from the group

Principal update

  • Thank you for all the love for Staff Appreciation week. It overwhelms us every year. Thank you to all who organized.

  • New building on schedule to be done July 2023.

  • Expansion of OVA in preparation for Mercer Middle School will happen starting this summer. Will change pickup-dropoff flow. Construction fencing and soundwall will be blocking part of the construction next year. More info here: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/capital-projects-and-planning/school-construction/projects/van-asselt-interim-site/

  • Will lunch be in or outdoors in fall? If we can move inside, I’m going to. (gusts of wind blew lunches off tables today)

MaT [Move-A-Thon] wrap up (Alaron)

  • We made our initial $150k goal!!

  • All students will get prizes

  • Money planned to be disbursed to schools in July

  • Feedback from Ms KT: Would have loved to know more ahead of time so we can prepare our classes. Hard to know what to expect when we got out on the field, esp the first group. Would love more info on what to expect - what the stations are ahead of time, where to start, how long at each station. Having the Cougar was awesome but my group really gravitated toward the Cougar and wanted to start there. Maybe don’t have the Cougar there at the beginning, but bring out with the popsicles. Kids had a lot of fun! There were plenty of supplies and space, they didn’t have to wait long, plenty of pencils and room for soccer.

BLT [Buliding Leadership Team] update (Carrie)

  • Ms Gray covered this update (about OVA expansion) in her update

Staff Appreciation Week recap: parents coordinated coffee, pastries, flowers, cards, and a lunch, and staff responded positively.

Art Walk update (Felie) Friday 6/3, 3:30-6:30pm

  • Black History Month banners will be moved from school to businesses on Beacon Ave. Need volunteers to install, take down, and put back up at school.

  • Frye Art Museum and others will have a few tables (in front of Cuisian Filipina I think)

  • Sets of 20 postcards - suggested donation of $15 (printing company donated), QR code to pay or a cash box

AANHPI month update: resources were shared with teachers, a May 28 family potluck was planned, and classroom activities included learning about Japanese incarceration, historical figures, and music from Samoa, Japan, and the Philippines.

8:20 - Last Operation Cleanup is this Saturday, 10am-12pm at Jefferson Park

8:20 - After school activities program (Tammy to update, followed by group discussion)

  • What was the After School Program? Tammy shared a helpful slide with a summary

  • Pros: having activities on site, cons: not having a coordinator identified yet

  • Tammy will touch base with Alaron and Ms. Pries to gather more information. Some parents would be interested in seeing the program resume.

8:40 - Closing: How are you feeling leaving the meeting?
