Working Meeting — special education staffing, safety, and fundraising

• 7:15-7:25 Welcome & introductions: Name, pronouns (optional), child/ren's grade/s, favorite fruit.

• 7:25-7:35 Breakout groups: Charissa

**• 7:35-7:50 Mr Alex and SPeD cuts - Case load numbers across the district and in the focus program, This is the 2nd year of a K-2 and 3-5 split. This year because of the case numbers the district has pulled one SPeD instructor and one IA, requiring us to recombine these two classes. **

**Meredith Wilson - Focus - having a classroom tailored for their needs and supports allows them to transition successfully into their gen ed classroom. Allows the students to feel successful. Focus allows students to feel successful and be able to integrate better into the general ed classroom. **

Notes from chat: We have 54 students in Special Education services at Kimball. 5 certificated staff, 2 Focus, 2 Access, and 1 Resource room. 10 IAs (Instructional Assistants) support the Focus and Access programs heavily and help with resource room. 2 teachers currently teach Focus, for 12 students total - they are cutting it back to 1 Teacher and 3 IAs.

**Moves will happen on November 1st, but before then we can hopefully petition the school board to reconsider this choice. This could include letters, or attending the Oct 20th Board meetings. **

**Alex will send around templates and some contacts of who we can contact. **

7:50-8:05 Color Brave Space norms reflection: @Michelle Bradley

8:05-8:25 - Covid safety concerns and transportation – Advocacy

Covid safety:

**Mr. Ruthruff - Concerns about lunch safety. Although students have been moved from cafeteria to outside (north and south play court), kids are sitting within 3 feet of each other unmasked. Although they are all facing the same direction, they turn to talk to one another, making situation feel unsafe. Ideas to improve safety: Spread the kids out more. Use other outdoor covered spaces that are at OVA? Shortage of staffing may be an issue here. Or put 10 air filters in cafeteria to make that space safe for eating as well? **

**Mr. Escamilla- Air tests have shown that spaces that were tested are safe, but some spaces were not tested because they were not occupied. Can share report with anyone who is interested. **

Transportation update:

**Ms. Gray - Met with Transportation director today, potential for huge driver shortage. Currently 40-60 routes are running late daily and could go to 140 routes that are not covered after Monday. Kimball has made the priority list as an interim school because none of the students are in a walk zone. The plan is that routes will be redone for much of the district and some students will lose routes completely, but for Kimball this may mean that the one route that has no driver will be filled. **

8:25-8:45 - Fund raising and the PTSA - Values and plans

**Michelle Bradley - Propose incorporate parts of Walk A Thon into Move A Thon so we aren’t doing both events. In collaboration with spring Move A Thon, have a field day at school. To engage families in fall, propose a Kimball Kitchen tasting day, perhaps on same day as Back to School BBQ. This year, plan to host Kimball Kitchen from November - January this year. Currently have fundraising deficient of $12k, hoping to make up difference with targeted email campaigns and fundraising more through Kimball Kitchen. Keeping notes for future PTSA members to follow. **
